“No,” Leslie says firmly. “We ran a high-resolution PET scan. There are changes in your brain that we can't explain away as a concussion. Your temporal and parietal lobes are showing significantly reduced glucose metabolism, and there is evidence of atrophy.” She takes a breath. “Bruce, these findings are consistent with young-onset Alzheimer’s disease.”
Tim nods. He was expecting this.
“Just because I've said the wrong name a couple of times or missed a gala here or there doesn't mean my mind is going,” Bruce insists. “I am perfectly–”
“You asked me if Alfred was annoyed at you because he hadn't brought you tea after patrol,” Tim says softly.
Bruce's mouth snaps shut. His eyes go a little misty and he swallows. “Alfred's dead,” he says, and it sounds more like a question than it should.***
The family learns to navigate Bruce's new reality, even as they grieve the pieces of him they're losing.
