The thing about Gotham in tourist season was that it transformed into something unrecognizable.
Not in the bones—the bones were always the same, always that particular blend of Gothic architecture and industrial decay, of gargoyles watching over cracked pavement and iron lampposts that had been bent and straightened and bent again by decades of super-powered altercations. The bones didn't change. But the skin of the city did something strange in late July, something that none of the Bats had ever quite been able to prepare for, no matter how many years they'd been doing this.
