    Summary

There were four hours of camera footage on the beetles. They’ve all seen parts, because it’s everywhere, but no-one has been able to bring themselves to watch the whole thing. But they owe it to Dr. Grace. They owe him far, far more than that.
The lights dim, someone presses play…and there he is.
    “So, I met an alien…”
Katsuki laughs, shaking his head in amazement. The whole world knows about the Eridians by now, but all he can think is: of course. Of course Dr. Ryland Grace made first contact twice. He always was the best of them.
    -
Or, for the first time in nearly 30 years, the Petrova Taskforce reunites for one last mission: to see what remains of their Dr. Grace.

Dick didn’t have a problem; he was fine.
He wasn’t hiding an injury, he wasn’t faking his death again, he was completely and utterly fine... not that they would have cared if he wasn’t.

    Summary

“Okay, screw you,” I say anyway, because that’s what we do. I take the shower head off its holder and aim it at Rocky, dousing him in water.

Rocky straightens his legs, startled. He just stands there, frozen, and for a moment I’m worried I’ve hit a nerve or something, that the sensation scrapes against something primal in his brain, like cold, wet caves back when Eridians didn’t yet know how to build shelter. I’m about to put the shower head back.

But then, the moment I’m no longer spraying him, Rocky turns around and all but shoves his carapace in my direction.

I’m perplexed, mustering him with the water aimed away from him, and Rocky stomps a claw against the tiling.

“Oh,” I say, grinning. I turn the spray toward him again, and Rocky gives a shuddering hum of pure glee. “You like that, huh?”

“Yes,” he says, wiggling from side to side like a tortoise rubbing its little butt on a bristle brush. “Like like like.”

    /////

Or: Rocky joins Grace in the shower. Shenanigans ensue.

    Summary

It's a remarkable fluke that Earth has managed: sending one scientist into space on one-way trip only to discover him back in the solar system after three decades, and sending an entirely different astronaut for a circuit up to Mars and back just for disaster to strike and he's left stranded alone on the planet. Wilder still that the timelines align, and both space-farers end up on the same ship back home.

    Or:
Project Hail Mary x The Martian crossover because the parallels go crazy and I needed to think thoughts that were not just spiraling about PHM so I rewatched The Martian and roped my other favourite scifi main character into it too. Featuring the dumbest fic title I have ever come up with.

    Summary

A high-pitched squeal erupts from your carapace before you can contain yourself. You’ve been waiting thirteen human years for this. For him.

Grace is in that spaceship. And he’s less than a human week’s distance away.
