Summary
“He was a policeman,” Chu declared one night.
He had been drinking steadily for two hours, although not so steadily that he had lost his ability to make confident statements about subjects he knew nothing about.
The Master set another bottle of beer in front of him.
“No,” Kosuzu said. “He doesn’t have a policeman’s personality.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means policemen like asking questions. Master never asks questions.”
“I ask questions.”
Everyone turned towards the counter.
The Master was slicing spring onions.
Kosuzu’s eyes narrowed. “When?”
“When I need to know something.”

Marilyn would point towards the wanderer.
The wanderer was not there that night, but his absence did not prevent him from becoming part of the discussion.
“Katagiri knows,” she said.
Everyone looked towards the empty stool he favoured.
Katagiri came and went without explanation. Sometimes he appeared three nights in a row. Sometimes months passed without anyone seeing him. He wore traditional clothing more often than modern clothes, spoke in observations that sounded like advice without quite becoming it, and had once spent an entire evening arranging peanuts into a pattern that only he understood.
He and the Master rarely spoke at length.
They also rarely needed to.
The Master would see him enter and begin preparing something without asking what he wanted. Katagiri would sit at the counter and watch him. Sometimes there was amusement between them. Sometimes sadness.
....
“You could have warned me.”
“I did.”
“You sent a postcard with a drawing of a crow.”
“The crow was facing east.”
Kosuzu blinked.
The Master stared at Katagiri.
Katagiri began eating.
“You knew what it meant.”
“I knew it meant you were being unhelpful in another prefecture.”
A brief smile crossed Katagiri’s face.
It transformed him, making him look younger and unexpectedly fond.
Kosuzu saw the Master’s expression answer it.
Not a smile exactly.
Something quieter.
Something that belonged to a time before any of them.
....
“You raised him.”
“No,” both men said.
They looked at each other.
Katagiri added, “He fed me.”
The Master said, “He refused to go home.”
“I had no home.”
“You had an aunt.”
“She believed in exorcism.”
“You were difficult.”
“I was fourteen.”
“You were difficult for fourteen.”

Ojiya
I spent my later teens, into my mid twenties, with a terrible stomach for a host of reasons. I was introduced to this version of ojiya by a friend in college, after I complained about being tired of weeks of bland foods like oatmeal and toast. Other Japanese people I know have since informed me that it’s a little like chicken soup—every family has their own slight variation, other than the use of leftover rice.
~500 ml (3 cups) leftover rice
710 ml (3 cups) leftover miso soup
14 grams (½ ounce) dried Shitake
30 ml (2 tablespoons) nihaizu
3 eggs, beatenBring soup to a low boil, add rice and mushrooms and cook until rice starts to break down, about 10 minutes. Turn off heat, add nihaizu and eggs, stirring until the eggs cook.

Summary
After the events at Wolfhagen, Gabriel gets cold feet and runs from whatever was developing between himself, Nathan, and Annalise. A year later, they track him down in the New World and show him just how much he means to them.
**Based entirely on the Netflix adaptation, not at all canon-compliant with the books.**

"That's nasty," Nathan coughed.
Gabriel tossed his half back, aiming it at the back of his throat. When he'd swallowed the sharply bitter and salty flavour, he scoffed. "I forgot to add the sugar. I thought we were all adults here."
....
Annalise came first, clamping around Gabriel and arching against him. And then, because womankind had made some kind of deal with God or the devil in return for unnatural stamina, she came again, louder, clawing at Gabriel's shoulders like she was drowning. Somewhere in his apartment something clattered to the floor.
