"What do you want from me?" Ash snaps, turning on Jessica. "I said I'd try, so I'm trying, okay? You want me to eat, so I'll fucking eat. Why is nothing I do ever enough?"
He wants to stomp his foot like a child. He wants to wrap his arms around himself. He wants to slam the fridge door shut and watch the whole house fall apart because of him.
But instead he just stands there. Glares at Jessica.
"It's okay," Jessica breathes. "You're okay, sweetie. Do you want me to cook for you?"
Parents care for their children. They keep them safe. The people who hurt you are not your family.
A mother cooks dinner for her son.

"You almost died?" Max says, exasperated and confused at Ash's insistence. He raises an eyebrow.
"Should've. Could've. Would've," Ash mumbles.
Max doesn't know how to respond to that. Instead, he just says, "Sit down, Ash. Please."
Ash looks at the floor, but trudges back to the bed and all but collapses onto it. "What do you want?"
"Can I sit down?" Max gestures to the bed.
Ash rolls onto his back and stares up at Max. "It's your bed," he intones.
"It's not," Max insists. "You're using it, and I'm not going to take that from you. Or take—anything from you. Just tell me what you're comfortable with."
"You that desperate to get in bed with me?" Ash teases, and Max's stomach turns.
Max sits down on the floor without another word.
Max changes the dressing on Ash's stab wound.

"No," Jess snaps. "I don't."
Ash rolls his eyes. "I know how to satisfy a woman, too, you know ..." He licks his lips, and Jessica's stomach turns.
She really thinks she might get sick, watching him behave this way.
Grimacing, Jess turns away. "Please, stop," she whispers.
Ash laughs under his breath. "Why? Is it working?" he teases.
"It's triggering, Ash."
Raising a teenager to be kind.

Shorter's stomach is in his shoes, and his heart is in his throat. He heard from his gang that someone finally saw Ash, over in Jersey.
Sleeping.
Beneath an overpass.
Covered in blood.
"He never gives you, like—an ETA when he leaves?" Shorter demands.
Alex shrugs. "He don't tell us shit," Alex says. "Honestly, I don't think he knows when he'll be back until after he's gone."
Shorter curses under his breath. "And you never try to find him?"
Alex shifts his weight from foot to foot. "We know where he is, usually. At least some of the time."

"Shorter ... ?" she asks, a sinking feeling in her gut. Shorter wouldn't have gotten a kid this young involved in his gang bullshit, would he have? Nadia has been worried about Sing recently, but Shorter's managed to keep him out of everything so far.
"This is Ash," Shorter says, smiling awkwardly. He nudges the boy forward, but the kid—Ash—flinches almost violently at the touch. "Shit, sorry. Ash, this is ... this is just my sister, okay? She's—she's safe."
It's silent for a moment. The kid glances up at her, but it seems like Shorter's words did nothing to reassure him. He looks at her with a mixture of skepticism, anger, and fear before he looks away.
"Oh, Nadia," Shorter starts. "I told you about Ash. Remember? The kid I met in juvie."
"Not a kid," the kid growls.
Nadia meets Ash.

It's late.
Ash knows, on some level, that he shouldn't be out of the room by himself right now. It's not safe, and—and it's not allowed.
It's just that, sometimes, he'd like to pretend he can forget what he is. Pretend he hasn't taken it to heart yet, that it's not as branded on his soul as it is on his body.
While staying at Max's house, Ash gets up for a drink of water.

He wants to believe that Eiji is like Shorter, and wouldn’t be interested in hurting him, but what are the chances that the world would let Ash meet two people like that?
Ash can pay his gang back by protecting them from the other gangs of New York, but he hasn’t done anything for Eiji or Shorter. He hasn’t paid his fucking dues.
And trying to sleep next to the two of them in a fucking motel room is a stark reminder of that.
It’s odd, lying here between them—it would be the perfect opportunity to pay them back, if only they would let him.
Ash slips out of the motel room on the way to Los Angeles, but Eiji and Shorter won't let him be alone with his thoughts.

Dabi blinked at him, eyes rolling back in his head for the span of a second. He shifted, staring back at the world like he wasn’t quite sure how he’d got there.
And now Dabi was staring at his hands, spacing out. He touched the staples lining his wrist, and stared at them perplexedly. Oh god, was Dabi high?
“I’ve been working my ass off for the League, and you don’t even have the decency to give me your attention?” Keigo scoffed.
Dabi looked up at him, expression devoid of its usual smugness. He blinked steadily at Keigo.
“…Hawks?” He asked numbly.
“Who else were you expecting, Dabi?” Keigo sighed tiredly. “You were the one to call this meeting.”
Dabi’d called this meeting, dragging Keigo away from work that actually mattered, work that actually saved people, to just stare at his hands and ask obvious questions. When he’d been given this mission, he hadn’t expected this to be part of it.
“I’m not Dabi,” Dabi said.

Realistically, Dabi should be mad.
Dabi should be mad because Hawks got hit with a quirk on patrol and didn’t tell him until it was too late; he didn’t text to cancel their meeting at Hawks’ place and didn’t even tell Dabi anything was up until he was playfully patting his shoulder, conveniently forgetting that the quirk was touch-activated.
After a sharp burst of light and a good minute of loud ringing in his ears, he came to, finding himself in Hawks’ body instead of his own. Hawks hadn’t even looked apologetic, either, just a little shocked while Dabi was trying to get a grip on what just happened and not freak out.
Hawks had looked taken aback but the expression was on Dabi’s own face and it was just- weird. And it could have been easily avoided.
So, all things considered, he should be mad. But he’s… not.
or: hawks and dabi swap bodies. dabi's forgotten what it feels like to be healthy.

When Fuyumi gets hit by a quirk that body-swaps twins, she wakes up somewhere else—despite the fact that her twin died a decade ago. That’s confusing enough on its own, but why is she surrounded by villains?
Dabi, meanwhile, keeps accidentally freezing things, but he thinks that’s a fair response to being called a name he hasn’t heard in a decade.

He’s standing on the corner maybe two blocks away from the foster home. The corner right where the subway trains empty out. He has a duffle bag full of his stuff hanging at his side.
He texted Bakugou.
Why the fuck did he text Bakugou?
His first instinct was Kaminari. But he didn’t want to scare him off with all this bullshit. Second was Jirou, but she would just want to kick his foster parent’s asses which wouldn’t help anybody. And… Shinsou doesn’t really have anybody else. He’s not close with anybody else in his class and he’s okay with that. He likes it like that. But at moments like this it’s… unhelpful to say the least.
But he still remembers when Bakugou got muzzled at the first sports festival.

Or: Shinsou has to run away from a foster home and Bakugou helps.
