Summary
There is a pen on Ryland Grace's desk.
It is the last thing on this desk to be cleared out and Eva stares at it for a long time before she pockets it, deciding against all logic that, in the worst case scenario, she could simply throw it away later. Everyone is too eager to gather their things and go home to have bothered her with paperwork yet, but it will happen soon enough. It will be useful, she tells herself.
When paperwork arrives, she suddenly can't find it in herself to even look at Dr. Ryland Grace's blue uncapped ballpoint pen anymore. She makes do with the one that is handed to her along with the paper itself to give her signature.
She leaves the pen in her coat pocket when she takes it off that night, and doesn't wear that coat again.
Involuntary memories are very difficult to avoid.

Summary
title shortened from: 'Sharks just want to play, experienced sailors fear the jellyfish'
In the canon universe we know, Eva Stratt and Ryland Grace would never be able to have more than what they did: a fleeting friendship, brushing the surface of what they *could* be but never dipping deeper. Stratt had a job to do. Grace had a world to save.
Here, however, meeting years earlier and in a universe where the sun will never dim, things go a little differently.
OR
aroace strattland working themselves out in the world, figuring out how to settle into the secret third thing that makes their lives so much better. Domestic fluff, years worth of waiting, two souls that just connect, even if they could never explain quite how, A shark and a jellyfish, bobbing their way through the ocean.
Podfic version!

Summary
Grace wakes up to a hand gently stroking his hair.
It’s late at night, ostensibly. The room is lit a dim but deep yellow, and in the air there’s the quiet atmosphere of a late night study session accidentally stretched a little too far. This is rare, on Stratt’s Vat. Grace’s office is right in the middle of the carrier, which is only logical when it serves its full-time duty of storing cleaning supplies for the 300-odd people sharing the same somewhat cramped space.
The silence starts to make sense when Grace remembers that he isn’t in his own office.
Grace is rested. Stratt is overworked and exhausted. It's probably normal and fine to kidnap your boss' work device in order to force them to sleep.

Summary
So, to be completely honest, Virgil is terrified of Janus.
He knows Janus is mean, sometimes. He's not the victim of some well-crafted manipulative scheme to knock him off his underground high horse – he knows Janus is scary, he likes it. There's an aura to him, of charisma and confidence and pride, something so innate to Janus that, if he didn't know any better, Virgil would group him in with one of those rich kid types who expect everyone to grovel at their feet because they've never known anything else. But Janus isn't popular at school, or the teachers’ favorite, or even particularly wealthy. He's just… like this. Effortlessly confident.
Janus stares down at the pocket knife right below his feet. It’s still open. The blade looks mocking, somehow.
(Twenty minutes away, Janus is having a very, very bad day.)

Summary
Janus and Virgil have been friends for years. Of course they've had arguments. That's what friends do. That's what people, in general, do when they find themselves in repeated proximity to one another, and have enough mutual respect to be honest with each other.
So, scratch that— Janus and Virgil have never had a single argument.
Which may or may not be a sign of something.
A.K.A., Janus spent a not insignificant amount of time around someone that he will, in all honesty, never really be friends with.
