Summary
Aziraphale Fell has always done things properly. He is an excellent pilot, disciplined, and determined to make captain. He has never been closeted, but he has always dated the right men: successful and appropriate. Love can wait. There are career destinations to reach first.
Anthony Crowley has a rather different reputation. A talented flight attendant with a sharp tongue and an even sharper uniform, he keeps his relationships casual, never staying long enough for anyone to expect more. He has learned not to expect much for himself.
Then they start working together. Somehow in the air, they fit. Aziraphale flies the plane; Crowley handles the people. They anticipate each other, trust each other, make each other better. What begins as a working partnership becomes friendship, then something more, eventually leading to an impulsive choice. Fear makes Aziraphale put his career first. He walks away, leaving them both devastated.
Six years later, neither has found the life they thought they were choosing. When they find themselves working together again, they have to decide whether they can be brave enough to stop treating love as something that can always be left until later.

It’s unseasonably warm for East Finchley in late December, but his breath still leaves puffs in the chilly air. It’s also cloudy, and already full dark at 17:00, so there aren’t any stars to look at and the moon isn’t visible. Pity.
Just then - a bright flash lights up from the back garden next door. It’s a man, standing in front of a free-standing fire pit, having just lit a fire. The warm glow illuminates his face in profile and Crowley leans on the railing to get a better look. White-blond curly hair puffs up around his head like a halo. The firelight silhouettes a cute upturned nose, a sturdy frame wrapped in a thick cardigan. Crowley can practically see his eyelashes from here. He’s beautiful.
“Oi! You there! Got a light?” Crowley shouts across at him.
The man turns in his direction, obviously not able to see him in the shadows. “Me?”
“Yeah, you!”
The man turns to look at the fire in front of him, then back to peer into the shadows again, “If you need, I suppose?”
“Excellent!”

Aziraphale is known as the Angel of the Rookery: the rector of a dilapidated church in London's worst slums. He's who people turn to when they're at their most desperate for help, kindness, or an inspiring word.
Crowley has been alone for over a decade, wandering from place to place in search of the means to settle down. His travels bring him to Lucas Morningstar's infamous tavern, where Crowley is promised enough money for his own land so long as he provides entertainment for the establishment's wealthy clientele.
All the staff there have heard of the Angel, but Crowley avoids the place like the plague. If past experience has taught him anything, it's that God had no love for men like him. But when a friend of his is badly injured on the job, Aziraphale's church is the only place he can turn to for help.
