Of course, Elrond was nothing but a mass of contradictions. He was Fëanorian, and yet not a kinslayer; he was Dior’s grandson, yet treated him as a son; he could well prove to be cruel despite his kind veneer. Logic suggested he should run from any Fëanorian as fast as he could. But if he ignored his hatred of the Fëanorians and looked at Elrond as a person, he found he liked what he saw. He had been honest with Dior from the start, even when it would have been more convenient for him to lie; he was patient; and he seemed kind and gentle. More than any elf he had ever met, he reminded Dior of Beren.
Elrond retrieves Dior, Elurín, and Eluréd from the Halls of Mandos in the Fourth Age and helps them adjust to life in Valinor as half-elves.

Two months after Thangorodrim erupts, Lúthien—lost in a blizzard—arrives in Himring. Maedhros, trying to keep his people alive through war and a deadly volcanic winter, has to contend with the politics of hosting a Sindarin princess as well as surviving Morgoth's onslaught. Neither of them really expect to fall in love.
And neither of them expect consequences that will shake the foundations of Middle-Earth.
