“Oh, Carter,” he tsk’d from her open doorway, but at least some of the concern had dissipated from his voice.
“Sorry I’m late, Sir,” she managed to open her eyes for just an instant, but he was blurry so she closed them again directly.
“Yes, that’s really what I’m worried about right now. Going to have to take away your perfect attendance plaque.”
Sam understood a few of his words, but mostly she understood his sarcastic tone. He had a few of them, but this was the one he used when he was trying to get her to take time off or eat an overdue lunch.

The not so in character, still finding their voice piece I did before Nothing At All. Not bad, but not good. Sort of abandoned/unfinished. Really just a smutty little trash repository for readers who keep sending me drink recipes. :)

An uncommonly cool Autumn night crashes Jack & Sam's second fishing trip at the cabin.
“What? If you’re not dreaming, you’re dead,” Jack justified. "A man has to have a goal, a dream, something to which he may aspire.”
“Seems like a great way to miss out on what one already has.” Sam shivered and he pulled the blanket up over her shoulders.
“Ah, but without past aspirations, the present wouldn’t exist.” That’s right. He was as smart as she thought he was. Almost.
