Those letters. Chuuya had burned the first three. The fourth he'd read twice before burning. The seventh he'd kept, folded inside the lining of his jacket, because it contained a single paragraph about inhuman things learning to love and it had made something behind his ribs crack open like a door that had been painted shut.

Manipulation. Obviously. Chuuya had recognized it from the first letter. The mirroring of his private fears, the careful escalation of emotional intimacy, the strategic vulnerability Fyodor wove through each page. Textbook. He could diagram it.
He'd come anyway.
Because being seen—even by someone who was seeing you on purpose, with intent, as part of a design—was still being seen. And Chuuya had spent his entire life as a silhouette in someone else's story.
