He bends down, places his briefcase next to his desk, when he hears the door open behind him.
He turns around. “Char-!” This is not his Charlie. He finds a fellow in the exact same pinstripe suit and tie as he is wearing. He’s just shorter, with darker skin, freckles, and brown hair. “Who are you? What are you doing down here? Are you new to MI5?”
The other man makes a confused face. “No, I’m not new. I’m Ewen Montagu. I work down here in this… disgusting basement.”
Monty scoffs. “Well you must be mistaken. My name is Ewen Montagu and this is my disgusting basement.”
This is when the door opens again. And another blonde man, wearing the same attire, pops out of the door. He points at the both of them. “Hello chaps, what are the two of you doing in my office?”

Summary
Hester thinks she must have undercooked the chicken she made for dinner last night. She was just trying to do something nice for her husband, despite her lack of cooking ability. No good deed goes unpunished, and now she is on her knees in the bathrooms of MI5 vomiting.
“Hester! Are you okay?” Jean yells from outside the bathroom stall.
___Or Hester is not okay, she actually cooked the chicken perfectly fine, and this child is about to have a lot of parents.

At age 8, Ewen Montagu is not yet Ewen Montagu. He’s uncomfortable in his body, but he isn’t quite sure why yet. Also he has bigger fish to fry because his baby sister was just born and she is royally messing up his life.
At age 8, Ewen Montagu meets Charles Cholmondeley in the park. Ewen is the first person outside of Charles’ family that Charles ever hugs.
At age 8, Ewen Montagu gets lost in the city of Oxford and is rescued by a pair of Oxford University students who don’t know it yet, but will really love him one day.
At age 8, Ewen Montagu’s life is about to change for the better.

Summary
It was Charles who Monty put his arm around as the auditorium lights went dark. Jean couldn’t decide if this was a new pattern of behaviour, or if it was purely the stark contrast to their last theatre outing that had prompted her to take note. Monty had been a tactile person for as long as she’d known him, that wasn’t up for debate. But Charles relaxing into Monty’s arm rather than tensing beneath it was certainly a development.
Jean let herself be drawn back into the chatter as they walked to the underground station, hugging them both tightly before they waved her onto her train. Her smile fell apart as soon as she disappeared into the tunnel, wondering when their little trio had turned into one matching pair and Jean trailing behind.

Summary
The first time that Hester was called a mother, there was no baby in her arms. It wasn’t in a maternity ward with a handsome man holding her hand as most mothers-to-be awaited eagerly for. Instead, it was in the familiar backdrop of the typing pool, with a mortified young woman stood behind a desk like a deer caught in the headlights.
Miss Leslie was far from the first girl to look up at Hester with wonder in their eyes upon reiterating ‘it’s Miss Leggatt,’ even if she was the first person to call Hester ‘Ma’ in the midst of a workplace conversation. She’d needed a lot of guidance it was true, but it didn’t take a genius to elicit from Jean’s clipped comments that she wasn’t getting any at home. If it took Hester mothering her a little more than etiquette allowed for Jean to find her feet, then she was glad to do it.
