Summary
At the party after Aragorn and Arwen's wedding, a new couple meets a very old couple.
Erestor and Glorfindel think these kids are adorable and proceed to start namedropping famous dwarves they've met, reminiscing about the Actually Fairly Terrible Old Days, and attempting to teach Gimli the difference between the various kindreds of the Firstborn without causing a diplomatic incident.
Later, Legolas drops a few eaves and hears Nice things.

Summary
"Your beard obstructs too much of your mouth" is not polite to tell a dwarf, nor does Legolas wish to explain why he needs to see Gimli's mouth to know what he says.
Gimli, meanwhile, spends the first part of their journey together ignoring the elf out of indignation.
This all changes with an explanation and a belated answer to what Gimli had attempted to ask before they set out. From there on, they are friends. Or, in the words of Aragorn:
"I would have an easier time separating Gimli from his axe than I would separating him from you. And you know that he does not relinquish his axe so easily."

Summary
Perhaps by carrying two such unusual riders, this horse has become something like them. Growing Elflike and Dwarflike together: some of Gimli's stout loyalty and stubbornness, some of Legolas' free light humour and wild spirit. Something remarkable.
Or perhaps he was always remarkable, and it took the travels of an Elf and Dwarf to bring it to light.
