Humans and norn sometimes get soul marks - the name of their ideal partner - written on their skin. The pair can sense each other, and if they ever meet and make contact, they're even able to hear each other's thoughts.
Canach is the first sylvari ever born with one, though it seems dysfunctional. It reads his own name.
There's no bond there, no presence on the other side. And even if there was, he would never, ever want to meet them.

Summary
While working on solving the issue of Grace slowly dying of starvation, malnutrition, and a host of other issues, the Eridians discover the human internet (largely Wikipedia) and fall down a rabbit hole of trying to figure out everything they can about the needs of their squishy alien savior. While most of their focus is on the food issue, another link catches their (metaphorical) eyes.
"Touch starvation, also known as touch deprivation or skin hunger, is the physiological need by humans and other species for physical contact with their own species or other living beings."

Rocky visits Grace's life support quarters with some exciting news, some time into his recovery on Erid---the biodome habitat has finally been completed.
It takes a step through the airlock and sinks down into rough sand and pebbles. I chirp and hop down after it. Grace has not seen the biodome yet, but neither have I, and in my enthusiasm I dart slightly ahead.
Grace inhales so sharply that I turn to hear him better in a panic. “Grace? Grace, what is wrong? You are hurt?”
My assumption is quickly corrected when, without warning, it bolts.
