His lips part, and I hear the fluid gather inside his mouth. I can see soft tissues, the shifting muscle of the tongue, hard echoes off those chips of bones he calls teeth. Everything is coated in a layer of thick, sticky liquid. I know I should be disgusted, but somehow, I’m not. Grace’s sheer helpless need fills me with nothing but affection.

“Not — not understand,” Rocky continues, a little higher now, his body shuddering. “Try Vℓ times, all failure failure failure. Eridian mating sometimes fail, but not this much. This much unprecedented. Thought location, temperature, time of year problems in previous attempts — fixed all, Grace know Rocky and Adrian work to fix all, and still failure, still.”
Grace fidgets with his hands, stretching each knuckle and palming the free edge of each nail, to keep from throwing himself onto Rocky and howling like an animal.
(Because somewhere along the way, Rocky and Adrian's wish for kids had become Grace's own, too.)
OR: Rocky and Adrian's eggs keep dying long before they hatch, and no one knows why. Grace — who definitely doesn't see himself as a parent to those hatchlings, how stupid and impossible would that be?! — has the normal reaction, which is inventing gene therapy from scratch to help the next egg survive.

She scowls at him, face hardening with her lack of amusement. “Don’t be an idiot.” Pepper straightens, clearly wanting no more than to be done with this whole conversation. “Maybe it was one of those college interns.”
He shakes his head fiercely. “No. This must be- shit, what are those called? Something effect... the effect of something...”
