The third way to become a Gotei 13 captain is Trial by Combat: to defeat a captain one-on-one with at least 200 witnesses from the captain's division.
The defenses of Soul Society were considerable—nearly impenetrable for anyone short of a shunpo expert with Captain-level reiatsu. Speed enough, in essence, to breach the gate in the heartbeat before it fell and power enough to disable the guardian before he could warn the Seireitei. By the time Jidanbō’s unconscious body was discovered, his assailant had already issued a challenge to Sousuke Aizen for captaincy of the fifth division.

Despite his enormous talent, Shane doesn't get the same opportunities Ilya does, so he doesn't end up on one of the league's best teams. But even though they don't become the league's most famous rivals, Ilya and Shane still find themselves drawn to each other.
Notes on Deafness:
Shane and his family speak American Sign Language (as is common in Canada). In this story, ASL is treated like any other language—when people who are fluent are speaking it, it will read like any other language. Shane has been deaf since birth, and his English is not perfect (as is common for many Deaf individuals). Shane's worldview and some of the particulars of his experience are based on real-life Deaf individuals, but he is not meant to represent every Deaf person.Notes on hockey:

Shane Hollander is the most sought-after goalie on the market in the 2015 offseason. The Bears are thrilled when they get the steal of the decade by signing him out from under Montreal. It’s even cooler that their captain is so close with Hollander. The two are like, best friends or platonic soulmates or something.
Alternatively: 5 times the Boston Bears should’ve guessed that Hollander and Rozanov were totally gay for each other + 1 time when everyone knew (Except Carmy).

No serious hockey fan or sports commentator worth their salt would have considered record-breaking Boston superstar Ilya Rozanov to be Shane Hollander’s rival exactly, but sleeping with a man who had a specific offense-related vendetta against him and a wrist shot like a jet engine to back it up was probably ill-advised just the same.
Or, Shane is a goalie. Ilya can’t score.
