“Do you want to get married?”
It’s dangerously close to 2 a.m. and they’re cutting back on Redbull (Elle’s idea, though Emmett’s pretty sure she’ll crack first), so it takes a moment for Emmett to process the words. When he does, he smiles and raises an eyebrow. “Right now?”
Elle scrunches up her nose at him from across their table, which is entirely covered in papers, books, and mugs of increasingly caffeinated tea. “No, not now, doofus. I mean in general. Is that something you want?”
She asks it the same way she asks everything: with complete sincerity and a degree of focus that would terrify a lesser man. He’s been that lesser man, but after three years of knowing Elle Woods, he likes to think he’s learned a bit about bravery.
