Jason had played out Bruce’s first words to him again and again, the blame, the disgust, the rejection, and then, sometimes, when he was feeling sentimental, tears and warmth and muttered prayers about the miracle of his return. He had thought he was prepared for anything.

Or; Immediately after the Lazarus Pit, Jason comes back.

Jason Todd is on the run from the League of Assassins, the only home he's known for the past 8 years. He doesn't really want to trade one organization specializing in espionage and assassination for another, but S.H.I.E.L.D. might just provide the safety he needs.

I wanted a happy ending, he thinks, but it’s so childish that he can’t vocalize it.
    ---
Jason Todd has his first kiss the week before Halloween, and Robin launches himself out of a moving car, and Red Hood crosses the line in a brand-new apartment and someone else's jeans.

OR: Jason Todd dies in the snow, and Robin dies in a warehouse, and Red Hood is terrified that he'll never die at all.

After all, there's a reason that, even with all this time and with all of his training, he's half a heartbeat slower in the instances when someone somehow manages to specifically level an AMT AutoMag II at Batman's head, why he can't abide the taste of buttered movie popcorn or, in more recent years, kita firfir with yogurt and jalapeños. Circumstances can make the average into the horrifying, can add dark shadows to ordinary corners, can even turn simple foodstuffs consumed in theaters and hotels into the last meals of a condemned man.

There are two days that remain sacred between them.
