Ed first meets Ling in ch 12
Mei Chang thinks her soulmate (Al) is dead because her mark disappeared when Al lost his body, and the Emporer is known for killing his children’s soulmates. Ed’s mark is plainly visible on the side of his neck, Ling’s is on his chest, and Al’s was between his shoulder blades. Soulmarks are black and fade when a soulmate is injured/dying.
Ed and Al build a parental relationship with Roy, and when Ed is fourteen Roy finally admits it to Hughes. They are emotionally much closer than canon- hugs are exchanged several times. When Ed is twelve a Xing spy sees his soulmark and the emporer orders him killed. Ed is gravely injured but survives. Afterwards he periodically has to fight of ninjas but is never so badly hurt.
After busting a child trafficking ring, the Furher promotes Ed to Lt. Colonel. Hawkeye convinces Ed to accept the promotion so he can better care for Al after they get his body back. Due to political unrest in Xing, Lanfan is kidnapped while disguised as Ling, and taken to the desert between Xing and Amestris. Meanwhile Ed is chasing the last of the traffickers into the desert and they run into each other after dealing with their respective goons. Lanfan realizes Ed is Ling’s soulmate but doesn’t tell Ed. Ed smuggles Lanfan into Amestris for medical attention since Amestris is much closer than Xing. Lanfan calls Fu, who brings Ling with him to sneak into Amestris. Lanfan didn’t tell Fu about Ed’s soulmark over the phone. Ed and Al have the canon meet-cute of finding Ling passed out in an alley, and Ed finds Ling aggravating and pretty. Fu and Ling take Lanfan back to Xing (with Lanfan promising to send Al Alkahestry books) without telling Ed about Ling’s soulmark. Ling hopes not knowing will keep Ed safer. -
