Pete has slept light for as long as he can remember. He’d always needed to when he was out on the road, and had learned to keep his night terrors under wraps when he still lived at his uncle's.
Most nights, Ray can sleep through almost anything. He can sleep through Pete's nightmares now, and back then, he could sleep through pouring rain, through the echoes of bullets shot through the brains of the guys whose names Pete never bothered to learn because all he cared about was Ray, keeping Ray safe, keeping Ray alive.

“My darling boy.” The endearment made his heart flutter. Pete's hand came back up to cradle his face, thumb stroking over his cheek and Ray had to resist the urge to melt into a puddle right then and there. “It doesn't feel like I'm kissing the carpet.”
“No?”
Pete shook his head and when he spoke, his voice was full-bodied and low. “Feels like I'm kissing a man.”
Ray’s face felt like it was on fire, lighting up beneath Pete’s soft caress as understanding set in. “You like it.”
Pete shrugged as best as he could with his arms around Ray’s shoulders, lips stretched into a grin. He leaned into him playfully. “And here I thought I was being so obvious.”
