Summary
“Aegarrax, you can always do more—you're such a crybaby,” Vermithor muttered as he watched his companion.
Aegarrax replied, wailing, “Just because you don't feel anything doesn't mean we're all like that. They were my joy; they were beautiful, and I created them with freedom in mind—and now... because of the humans, they're dead.” “I thought that by placing them in the hands of our favorites, nothing bad would happen to them,” he wailed. “But instead, they were the ones who killed them!”Belarion, fed up with Aegarrax’s sadness—which was affecting them all—spoke gently. “Let’s make a bet, my friend,” he said. “If I bring your precious dragons back to life, then you’ll stop crying and create what I’ve asked of you so many times. If I lose… I’ll do whatever you wish.”
Aegarrax, as defiant as ever, didn’t hesitate for a second to accept. Then Balerion set off for Tessarion, who, amused by the situation, agreed to Balerion’s request.
Aegon went to sleep that night, and when he awoke, he changed the course of history forever.
Or: where the ancient Valirian gods make a wager, and, giving their favorites one last chance, decide to entrust Aegon with the future.
