    “You absolute idiot,” Alex said, stepping closer, crowding him against the counter. “You think I’ve been showing up at your door like some kind of glorified dick appointment for six weeks because I don’t like you?”

    Henry’s stomach twisted up. “I thought—”

    But he didn’t get to finish. Alex kissed him, hard, like he’d been wanting to all night. Then again, softer, their lips sliding together in a way that was everything Henry had been desperate for and too terrified to admit. Alex’s hands were warm on his jaw, fingers brushing up into his hair, and for a moment all Henry could do was lean into him and feel everything, want, relief, terror, dizzy happiness, crash together at once.

    “Am I having a fucking stroke right now?” Alex asks after a series of rapid blinks, his ridiculous eyelashes drawing Henry’s attention, just like always.

    Arthur stands up, “Not quite, though I appreciate this is rather unusual circumstances. It’s not everyday your partner’s…” he looks towards Henry for confirmation at that point.

    “Husband’s” Henry corrects and Arhtur glances down at Alex's left hand and obviously spots his own wedding band resting there.

    “Sorry, of course, Husband’s dead father turns up on the doorstep.”

    “Right, so I wasn’t hallucinating… What the hell is going on, Hen?”

    OR: a time traveler's wife au - henry is thirty-two and about to adopt a baby of his own when arthur appears in his hallway on a quiet friday night.

    Alex is lost. The next logical step would be to try to track him down, like, in person. But he’s not going to do that. That’s insane behavior. Those are the actions of someone who doesn’t know how to take a hint, even though Alex can’t scrub the words you’re incredible from his mind. He’s folded and refolded the note a hundred times in an effort to forget.

    James wouldn’t write that if he didn’t mean it. Right?

    But Alex is not, he is not, going to prowl around the city with irrational optimism that James will also be out on the same street.

    He's not that desperate.

    Or: Alex's one unforgettable night with a mystery guy named James turns into a search across New York City to find him again. He's just missing a key few details along the way.
