"Stupid human," Adrian hisses. "You would give up your chance for him just like that?"
"Yes," Grace says hoarsely.
"Anything for him."

Luca’s front code is 2481, which, in all honesty, he had set as a joke. His landlord had been undergoing the process of changing all physical key locks to codes; when he had asked Luca to set his, he had just come back, exhausted, from a week-long roadie, too sleep deprived to actually think about it.
He’d typed in 2481. When he’d shared his code with them, a couple months later, he’d grinned, said, it was the first thing I thought of.
For the longest time it had been two, right? But then it became three. Became, as in evolved to be. Grew into a new state. Transitioned into. Simple, simple, simple. Eins, dva, trois. Freckles, cupid’s bow, dimples.

Luca stumbled again. Fuck. Were the boards close enough now to reach? He leaned forward— his arm outstretched and—
Smack! His hand slapped at the top of the boards, desperately grappling for purchase, but he couldn’t keep hold of anything. His entire body burned, and he fought to hold his head up.
His knees gave out, and his shoulder hit the walls of the rink, sliding down until he hit the ice with a dull thud.
“Haas! Haasy? Hey, hey!” Roz. Luca knew that voice, would know that voice anywhere.
OR
Luca collapses during practice and is hauled off the ice by his hockey idols, the Hollander-Rozanovs. Thus begins a journey to discover that constant pain isn't normal, bodies are made differently, and it's okay to be rare.
