Carrie had told him, a few weeks before leaving, that he moved too fast. That he could be... too much, sometimes. That his love was suffocating.
It had been something that haunted him for months after the door had closed behind her that final time, wondering if maybe they’d have still been together if he hadn’t thrown his heart at her so recklessly. If he’d pulled himself back, reigned his love in until it was palatable for her.
It certainly hadn’t been the first time someone had used that phrase when talking about him.
His mum had joked, when he’d bring her all manner of flowers and stones that he’d found, that his heart was too large for the rest of him, and that he may never grow into it.

He’d sworn to himself that he’d take it slower, next time, that he wouldn’t dive head-first and risk scaring away the next person possibly willing to give him a shot.
Only for him to immediately balls it up and confess his love to Sherlock before even asking him out.
How could he have been so stupid?

Sherlock scoffs. “You couldn’t put that poor technician out of his misery after you broke his bloody nose.”
“That was one time. I was trying to knock him out like – you know, how they do in the movies.”
John is standing in front of Sherlock’s chair.
Which, in fact, Sherlock is sitting in, a spool of boxing tape in one hand. He takes one of John’s hands into his own, turns it over, catalogs the roughness of his palms and the calluses and scars that trail up his fingers. Then, carefully, he begins to wrap them away, spinning the tape around and between them.
They will, after all, be boxing.
