    Rooster doesn't find the helicopter in time the first time round. By the time he's ejected, packed his chute, and stumbled into the clearing, it's too late. He clutches Maverick's hand, trembling, and listens as his gurgling breaths grow shallow, the red stain on the snow beneath him growing larger.

    Maverick wheezes out a final, rattling breath. Rooster chokes down a sob, curling over his body, and then -

    And then he opens his eyes on the carrier, standing in front of his F/A-18.

    Getting booted from a plane twice within a month really was not in Maverick's best interest, and Rooster needs to come to terms with his godfather's recklessness before the fear of losing him sends them both into a flat spin.
