Instead of leaving, Price grabbed a rickety old chair and dragged it noisily until it rested against the wall. He sat down with a quiet, grateful groan, pulling out a stubby cigar and his lighter.
"Ever used one of those before?" he mumbled around the lit cigar, putting the lighter back inside his tacvest without looking away from Kyle.
"No," Kyle answered honestly. "But it doesn't look too complicated."
Price's eyes crinkled. "You're right. Not complicated at all." He spread his long legs out in front of him. Kyle was momentarily distracted by the lazy display.
"Go on," Price cajoled, waving the glowing red eye of his cigar in the dark room. "We've been here a while, so I'll show you how to get it done quick."

“Come on, Buck, gimme a baseline here. What’s the worst thing you ever did? You tell me and I’ll tell you.”
In a brief rush of careless honesty, Gale said, “Got bucked off a horse when I was a kid. Probably that."
“Yeah, that’s you, Buck! That’s you. Jesus, bud. Worst thing you ever did was fuckin’ fall down.”

Sometimes it is a man too, still furred and broken-limbed but with a maw that could almost form words and hips that narrowed delicately.
It is never human, but sometimes it is a man.

Jonny smugly clicks the television off with the remote, and then tosses the pillow next to him so he can climb under the sheets. Patrick sits up after a minute, tucks his hand under his chin and abruptly swipes his hand out into a point, straight at Jonny, with a glare.
Jonny blinks, and then Patrick translates. It figures the first thing Jonny’d learn in sign language is 'fuck you'.
