Summary
“Craig pulled out his phone and opened his messages with Deran, typing out “Pope 911” before heading back to the living room to wait for Deran to get his ass over to the house. Craig wasn’t dealing with this alone, and Deran was always better at getting through to Pope than Craig was anyway. Less volatile. Less likely to run his mouth right back when Pope was being a dick.”
Lena’s adoption and Smurf’s diagnosis send Pope into a tailspin. Deran and Craig offer comfort.

Summary
The thing about the American West, Robby is realizing, is that is does not cradle. The land does not take, either. Robby tries to give, but the land does not take. He tries to leave his want in the prairies, tries to push it off an overlook in the Rockies, tries to leave it to bake under a juniper tree in the high desert, tries to throw it into the Pacific, but it stays with him and festers.

The old man digs into his bag and pulls out a beer can, offering it over. The can is wet with condensation, but Robby takes it and cracks it open. It’s not good beer, but it’s good for all this hollow grief that’s grown in him, finding a place next to the want. Or maybe it’s always been there and he’s just aware of it now. Regardless, he drinks the beer and he thinks about beers in the park after PittFest.
“You did good in there, son,” the old man says. “You keep doin’ good, you hear?”
Robby nods. “Yeah. I, yeah.” -

Summary
“Hey,” Dr. Abbot sighed. “Can you look at me, kid?”
Dennis forced his eyes to raise, meeting Abbot’s. The older man’s mouth curled into a small frown, and his jaw ticked. “If I ask you a question, will you be honest with me?”
Dennis’ teeth sunk into his cheek again. He nodded.
Dr. Abbot stood up a little higher, but his chin tilted down, maintaining eye contact with Dennis. He tucked his hands into his pockets. “Are you homeless?”
Jack Abbot found Dennis on the abandoned eighth floor of the PTMC. Dennis was humiliated to be discovered, but against all odds, Abbot invited Dennis to live with him—as long as he was considerate of Abbot’s younger brother, Andrew.

“He would like you to be his son,” Andrew spoke, and Abbot’s mouth pressed into a flat line.
Dennis glanced between the two of them, a tingling underneath his skin, not frantic, but something staticky. Potential energy. “Is that true?”
Abbot made a sound, faux-casual and dismissive. “Eh,” he shrugged. “It’s complicated. You’re young enough to be my son.”
Andrew’s dark eyes met Dennis’ from across the table. “He’d like you to be his son like I’m his brother.” -

Summary
Robby rubbed his hands over his face, the glass of his watch flashing as it caught the light. “I fall asleep during the game, or what?”
Jack considered his options:
- You had an episode.
- I busted into your apartment thinking you’d killed yourself but instead you were acting like a little kid. Ever gotten your head checked, Robinavitch?
- That sure was fucked up. Anyways, gotta jet.“Uh,” he said.

Bookmarker's Notes
Too bad that being really good at spotting when Michael Robinavitch is having an impending mental health crisis is pretty much like bringing a knife in a gun fight: makes you feel stupid-useless and it puts you at risk for getting caught in the crossfire.
