“But we are not a couple,” Wednesday flatly replied, remaining unmoved. Enid sighed, then squatted down in front of her friend.
“We can pretend,” she sang with an upswing in her tone. “C’mon, you can’t tell me this wouldn’t be the coolest contest to win and that it’s not practically made for us! ... honestly, it’s not like we’d have to change all that much. Half our friends already think we’re dating anyways–”
“What–”
“And if we just told everyone we were, they would all totes be on board. Trust me they stan.”
“They what?” Wednesday was just as confused with the slang as the topic, but Enid stood up and continued as if she was keeping up.
“This would actually be a perfect way to come out as a couple. I could say that we’ve been keeping it under wraps since we all know how you are,” Wednesday stood up and followed her roommate as she began to wander during the explanation of what was unfurling into some sort of teen romance masterplan. “But since we wouldn’t be able to participate in this contest without everyone finding out,” she abruptly turned around, causing the follower to stop short, “BAM! Here we are, world!” Enid beamed.
Finally an adventure without bad guys or danger… or was it?

It isn’t supposed to mean anything. It’s just Wednesdays heartbeat—steady, quiet, predictable—that somehow makes everything inside Enid settle.
So Enid starts finding excuses to get closer.
A shoulder to lean on. An arm around her waist. A head against Wednesdays chest. Just a little more contact. Just until she falls asleep.
The problem is, Wednesday doesn’t know why Enid needs her.
And Enid isn’t sure she’s ready to admit that maybe it’s not just Wednesdays heartbeat she can’t sleep with anymore.
OR
Enid discovers that she can only sleep properly when she’s cuddled up against Wednesday and listening to her heartbeat.
So naturally, she starts finding excuses to cuddle Wednesday all the time.

Enid turned and studied the occupants of the ballroom hoping to recognize someone she knew to try and figure out where or when she might be.
A bright peel of laughter echoed across the ballroom and Enid turned with a gasp. How had she missed that?

Summary
“I’m Enid Sinclair,” the girl says, and holds her hand out in a firm motion, asking to be shook. Wednesday keeps her eyes on the girl, Enid, for a second longer before focusing back on her typing, ignoring the hand being offered. After a few moments of silence, Enid drops it.
“Is that supposed to mean something to me?” she bites, squinting just a little when Enid makes no move to leave. The girl is so bright, face and hair more colorful than the flowers she keeps. It’s almost nauseating.
“I heard you were hiring,” Enid says, still confident. “I’m here for the job.”
Wednesday’s fingers slip, and the typewriter prints a line of jumbled letters. Her head snaps up at the girl, watching her cheery smile drop to something more anxious when Wednesday does nothing but stare angrily. She looks back at the paper, scanning the line she just messed up:
