Summary
Till croaks out a noise, straining his head up to look at Ivan. Ivan furrows his brows and kneels again. Till does it again. "Hnnn," he says. "Hnn, hnn." The skin on the unbroken side of his face cracks as Till grits his teeth. "Eeee. Hnn." He twitches on the ground. Ivan doesn't understand. It brings him none of the usual joy to know it.
Till slams his only arm against the concrete. The rotting skin of it, already cut-up and holey, completely sloughs off. Till ignores it, probably can't even feel it. The Till Ivan knew would have started crying: sudden, without any warning. "EEE-hn," Till grunts out, scratching at the ground. Ivan stares at the movements of his bony fingers—literal white bone, no muscle, no callus; simply bone—against the rough sidewalk. Till scratches out a long line, straight down.
"Till," Ivan says. He points to himself. "Till." His lip trembles. "You know me, don't you?"
After losing Till all the way back in high school, Ivan finds him again as a living corpse scratching at the stones of a filthy alleyway.

Xia Fei blinks, swallowing down what tastes dangerously like the buds of irrational jealousy towards this mystery boy. It's hard to imagine Vein ever having been a child - he's just one of those people who always seemed like he came into the world fully formed, sharpened and quenched like fine steel, made to cut. "Did you ever see him again?"
Vein tilts his head to the side with a soft huff of laughter. "You could say that."
Xia Fei returns to China with more questions than answers, and God, he's tired of other people making all his decisions for him.
