Lestat overdoses on a dreary Wednesday afternoon in the middle of December, all by himself in his too-big apartment and dressed down to a golden sleeping robe.
He's pronounced dead for six and a half minutes. He comes back.
And then he meets Louis.

Summary
Lestat is born in a cold autumn to a cold mother and a disappointed father. Her name isn't hers, really, but a jumbled together collection of letters that was meant for a version of her born in a different body.
She is a girl, and her family does not let her forget it for a single moment. Her father and her brothers scold her for hiking up her skirts or spitting, and her mother tells her that she is destined to be broken of such habits, but does not actually discourage them.
Lestat realizes when she is very young that her mother is miserable.

He sees Louis’ eyes flit between Claudia’s body next to him, Antoinette’s bloody corpse on the ground, and Lestat against the wall. The dagger is still in his hand.
Louis finally gets up and takes a step towards Lestat.
Lestat’s knees buckle, and he lets himself fall to his knees. He raises his head in acceptance, bares his throat, and says, “It’s okay. I see that now.”
The plan doesn't work. Claudia falls. Lestat doesn't. Louis has to figure out where to go from here.
Everything changes - maybe for the better, but it won't be easy.

“It is I who should apologize,” Lestat whispered. “I never meant to make you cry. I just did not expect you to react so strongly.”
Louis stared at him.
Lestat had the decency to look abashed, but continued, “You said you wanted to kill me. Still, even now. And besides! It is not like I would actually die.”
Lestat is taking his attempted murder remarkably well. Too well.
Louis is not.
