Summary
Even at a softer volume, the tone was so familiar that Jefferson felt a warmth spreading through his chest, and he smiled in spite of himself. Adams regarded him, looking up with his usual wry expression, his well-intentioned almost-smirk, the face that so many found caustic who did not know the gentleness and compassion in its sharp intelligence; that face, softened by his sleep-rumpled hair and the shadow of beard on his jaw. Before he could reconsider, Jefferson reached out and rubbed a thumb over Adams’ chin, and then both men froze.
“Are you to bid me good night, then,” Adams said quietly, but with any trace of bitterness or mockery absent from his voice. Jefferson thought he heard an underlying steadfast curiosity.
(In which circumstances bring a weary Adams and a restless Jefferson into very close proximity.)
