Grace risks his life to protect Rocky when a minor explosion occurs onboard their ship. Rocky is not having it. When will his stupid human realise that sacrificing himself for his far more durable alien friend is a no-go?
So, Rocky decides to discipline Grace a little.
Grace enjoys it a bit too much.
“Grace not understand, question?” Rocky’s voice was low, dangerous, gravelly, the translator unable to smooth out its rough edges.
Grace shivered. “I—I don’t get—I mean, I get you’re angry, but—”
“Rocky. Not. Angry.” Rocky’s claws whipped out to grab Grace by the ankle, and Grace stumbled. “Rocky determined. Grace will understand, statement. Rocky will make Grace understand.” The claws pulled inwards, inexorably, like some kind of godforsaken tractor beam, and Grace fell painfully to his knees, hauled closer and closer to a Rocky whose carapace had gone terrifyingly still.
Unshakeable resolve. Was this what Rocky had looked like when he’d saved Grace’s life?
And suddenly, Grace’s heart was pounding.
