By the time David was in the jeep to the front, he had talked himself into a plan. He’d had a lot of time to think about it, in the months he was in hospital, about what he’d do once he was back with the 101st. The plan was to keep his head down, and keep away from Liebgott. David was going to be the most unremarkable infantryman who’d ever jumped out of a plane. Middle of the column. Back of the truck. That was the plan.

David had talked his way onto the patrol and while he was doing that he had felt like a canny operator, working his odds and reading the room. Of course he was just being led where Liebgott wanted him to go, but that was fine. There was a whole chain of men in charge of telling David what to do; at least Liebgott had transparent motives and knew what was going on.

“Bucky.” Gale was looking at him with attention now, trying to figure out his angle. “What?”
“Come on, Buck, gimme a baseline here. What’s the worst thing you ever did? You tell me and I’ll tell you.”
In a brief rush of careless honesty, Gale said, “Got bucked off a horse when I was a kid. Probably that."

But the more Maul tries to mold his old foe, the more he seems to bend himself.
