Summary
It's the summer after graduation and Hawkins is plagued by a heatwave. As Mike whiles his days away at the pool, he tries to figure out why he no longer feels normal about Will - and why he can't stop staring at his abs. But when lights start flickering and kids are talking about strange things happening at the Creel mansion, Mike soon realises that his identity crisis isn't the worst of his problems. His obsession with keeping Will safe makes him confront some traumas of his past - and feelings he hasn't been able to name.

The first time it happens, Will classifies it as a little accident.
When he wakes, the morning sun is burning through the window onto their faces, and Mike’s cursing as he stands to close the curtains, stumbling all the way.
“Scoot over,” he grumbles, voice dry, and for a second Will can’t do anything other than sigh like a lovesick idiot. It’s a second too late for Mike, because he grumbles more words Will doesn’t catch under his breath and then physically pushes Will towards the wall to lay beside him, arm over Will’s middle. A second of silence passes, then Mike sighs, only to whine: “Fuck, my head hurts.”
Will can’t help it: he breaks down laughing, much to Mike’s offense.

Will had never really talked about his time in the Upside Down before. Dustin had tried asking, once, but fortunately, Mike had shut it down before Will had even gotten the chance to refuse. It was a relief, at the time, to deny those awful memories the opportunity to come to light. There was a finality to it-like admitting what had happened to him would make it real.
"I also hid," Will said. "For a long time."
"In a memory?" Lucas asks cautiously.
Will starts to shake his head no, then tilts his head. "Sort of. Not really. In Castle Byers."

“Yeah. Yeah, Holls, I understand.” A pause.
“How quickly do you need us to be there?” Another, longer pause.
“Everyone is safe, right? I have to talk to Will, and I’m sure we can be there as soon as possible but— Yeah. Okay, I get it. I’ll call you back in a bit.” A final, much shorter pause.
“It’s not too much, Holls. We are always here for you. Just say the word. See you soon. Love you, bye,” Mike finishes, his voice gentle and comforting. Will hears Mike huff a heavy sigh and then the click of the phone being placed back onto its spot on the wall.
“Okay,” Mike breathes out while sitting down. He turns sideways on the couch, mirroring Will to face him. “So, you remember Holly’s boyfriend, right?”
Mike and Will live a comfortable life together in New York. It's 1999, and their little bubble couldn't be more perfect. But after an emergency call from Hawkins, they suddenly find themselves as gay uncles to... Holly's boyfriend?
