It was a freak accident.
On October 4, 1988 a plane had fallen apart mid air. One of the engines had crashed through the roof of a house and killed an innocent teenager. Or... had it?
Donnie Darko wakes up in the hospital with his only recollection being what the doctors tell him was a schizophrenic episode. It doesn't make sense because it had all felt so real. For him, this should have been his second time cheating death. Now he's left to struggle with sorting out what was real and what wasn't as everyday life still demands his attention.
