Darry desperately wanted to go home, to hold his daughter, and to shield her from the unjust nature of the world. Was it selfish? To bring a child into a world that would show it rejection without even a second thought? Despite all of the endless light their little Arlo brought into their lives, would it all eventually be snuffed out? Even the thought of that future was enough to make Darrel physically nauseous.

Or, In an alternate universe where a small portion of the population was struck with a virus that mutated them into half-canine people, Darry ends up being one of them. After the birth of his daughter, Arlo, problems begin to arise which leads his husbands with no choice but to find some sort of medical solution to help Darry regulate his emotions.

The mortgage bill was still missing.
It usually showed up the first week of the month. It was usually the first one Darrel paid, to make sure he knew exactly how much they'd be left with in the bank afterward. It didn't show up the first week, or the second week. Now it was Wednesday of the third week, and it was nowhere to be seen. Ponyboy's tuition bill was also late now by a week. He wasn't quite panicked about it yet, but he was getting there.

After a lifetime of giving and no taking, Darrel Curtis Jr. has given up on hoping much for the future even as his brothers are moving up in the world. Lucky for him, his brothers don't like leaving a debt unpaid. Ponyboy is home from college unexpectedly, with good news and determination to change his brother's life for the better, even if it's just one step at a time.
