“Hm,” Ilya hummed, sliding his glass in front of Shane. “Maybe you have just never tried the good stuff. From Russia.” He leaned over to whisper in Shane’s ear. “Do you want a taste?”
“No thanks,” Shane said, turning his head away to get some distance. “I’m actually waiting for someone.”
“Who?” Ilya asked, though it sounded more like a demand than a question.
Shane smirked. “My husband.” He looked Ilya up and down slowly. “And he’s the jealous type so you should be careful.”

Even so, they could never be anything. Because of Russia, because of the NHL, whatever— there were a myriad of terrifyingly real reasons they couldn't.
So what fucking sane God would put this choice in Ilya's hands? No all-knowing benevolent force would put Shane Hollander in front of him, fully aware of everything between them save the way it ended, and expect benevolence from Ilya in return.
Why be benevolent? What the fuck did he care how this turned out? Ilya was a coward, an asshole through and through, self-serving and selfish. God was not expecting any measure of sainthood from him anyway.
Besides, Hollander had left once before.
He would survive him leaving again.

Shane's hit on the ice happens the day after the ill-fated tuna melt. Ilya, feeling oddly guilty for cultivating the locker room mood that may have led to the hit, still goes to visit Shane in the hospital only to discover that the impact removed his full memory of the day but not the feelings it dredged up.
Shane unknowingly gives Ilya a choice. Ilya knowingly chooses wrong.
