Summary
Shane pulls open a drawer where he keeps a pen and a note pad, and quickly pulls it out to start writing. Ilya won’t tell him what is wrong, but he at least has a few ideas.
1. Ilya misses Boston. He lived there for years, had established a life there with friends. More of a clubbing and party scene than Ottawa. He misses Svetlana.
2. Ilya misses the Raiders. He moved to a bottom of the barrel team, before Ilya came along they lost more games than they won and it’s only recently that they’ve been winning anything, and even then the losses are still frequent.
3.Shane stops writing. His heart hammers in his ears as he stares down at the notepad, the sad little list looking back at him.
3. Ilya is lonely. He misses sex. He misses women.

Shane notices that something is bothering Ilya. He seems miserable, and the less he talks to Shane about it, the more Shane begins to spiral, searching for a reason and ways to make it better. Turns out, he could not have been more wrong.Based on chapter 21 of The Long Game, instead of Ilya suggesting that Shane should sleep with other men, Shane suggests Ilya should sleep with women.

Shane Hollander remembers being 19 and single.
He wakes up after an accident at thirty, captain of the Metros, engaged to Ilya Rozanov, and apparently in the middle of the biggest scandal in hockey history.
He remembers none of it. And he certainly doesn't remember why, hours before the accident, he looked his fiancé in the eyes and said I'm sorry before walking out.
Shane sat on the edge of the bed. His phone was gone, his head hurt, he wanted a glass of water and some painkillers. He had no idea where anything was in his room. He opened the bedside drawer to find a collection of items that left absolutely no room for interpretation.
Shane slammed the drawer shut. Hard.
Why did he own so much of this stuff?
Why was it organized?
Who organized anal plugs and dildos by size and color?
That was when Rozanov chose to walk into the room.
“Did you already fall? Do I have to fucking call the hospital, Hollander, I am too tired for this…”
His eyes landed on Shane, then on his hand on the drawer, then back on Shane.
Shane pointed accusingly at the drawer.

Money, status, a good fuck. In a jagged, sharp way, it hurt to know it took someone who was once a stranger to show him true, unconditional love and not the ones who made him, who watched him grow.

“Do you know how many guys would kill to be in your position?” Hayden asks him.
Any guy besides himself, Shane thought pathetically.
“Everything will be fine. You’re nervous today, but you’re going to regret NOT going that aisle,” Hayden told him definitively. “You love her, remember? This is the next step.”
With that, Shane walked down the aisle and married his best friend. She was beautiful and looked so happy. Shane did love Rose and he would do anything to keep seeing that smile, including giving her the wedding of her dreams. He drank more than he ever drank in his life, and remembers very little from the rest of his wedding besides everyone telling him how lucky he was and that he has a great future ahead of him.
One month later when Scott Hunter invited his boyfriend onto the ice after the Admirals won the cup, Shane thought about how he would love to do the same with the love of his life one day. With someone who suspiciously does not look like his wife.
