Summary
After HYDRA, Bucky's Sentinel gifts are out of control, and nothing appears capable of helping. He keeps falling into Zones, but none of the Guides that SHIELD continues bringing in are able to form even a superficial bond with him, instead ending up breaking down themselves. The only Guide capable of being around him for longer periods of time is Tony, and Bucky can't help but want, even though he knows an attempt at a bond won't end in anything but pain for the both of them. So he'll keep his distance, no matter how much he wants to get closer.
Tony, in the meantime, longs. But he knows he's no good as a Guide, knows that Bucky deserves so much more than him. So he'll stay away, even when all he wants is to get closer.

“I don’t like this,” Steve mutters to him, as he shifts awkwardly on his feet in the lounge of Tony Stark’s absurdly large Malibu mansion.
Bucky sighs and resists the urge to roll his eyes. This isn’t the first time (and it certainly won’t be the last) that Steve has expressed that very sentiment, and while Bucky also recognises the futility and drawbacks to this particular job, it’s a job, it’s their job and it puts money in their bank account, which is something that Bucky won’t turn his back on.
“I just don’t understand why someone like Tony Stark needs a bodyguard,” Steve complains, quietly. “Some spoilt little rich boy, so full of himself that he thinks the whole world is out to get him?”
“Shut up, or you’re going to get us fired,” Bucky hisses.
Steve shakes his head. “All I’m saying is that I don’t want to have to spend the foreseeable future looking after some dolled-up, greedy prep school reject.”
Or, alternatively, five times that Tony Stark surprised Steve and Bucky, and one time they didn’t really care.

“Like what?” Sam asks, flat. Bucky grins, just a little, sharp.
“I can think of a few things,” he says, and steps closer, watches how Sam doesn't step away. They're in each other's space, and Bucky knows goddamn better than this, knows he put himself away in Bucharest for a reason, but fuck, he's tired and he's pissed off and he's reckless, and so is Sam, energy bouncing between them. “For instance,” Bucky says, waits a beat. “I'm pretty dumb,” and hears Sam's breathing speed up.

Simmering just below the surface of this look is the reason why someone like Steve would drop the shield for Bucky not once but twice, and would make that same decision over and over again if he had to.
It’s not like Sam didn’t get it before. He did. Of course he did. He’d have given everything up for Riley, would still give all of this up in a heartbeat if it meant having Riley back in his life, now more than ever. He got it before, all right.

Bucky looks at Sam. Sam looks back at Bucky. Sam’s arms are crossed over his chest, his forearms bare. Bucky carefully doesn’t look at Sam’s forearms, or the way his t-shirt is pulled tight over his shoulders, straining just a little at the seams. Bucky’s not looking at that at all. He makes eye contact, careful to keep his face neutral.
Sam’s eyes are soft and dark. Maybe a little amused. He has very long eyelashes.
Bucky swallows hard.
“Great,” he says. “That’s just— great.”

That seems to be the thing that breaks the ice between them; Bucky's never really hung out with Sam before, past being jammed into a too-small car for six hours and then two uncomfortable months in a safehouse trying not to get on each other’s last nerve. Now they’re getting lunch or coffee every few days. Sam falls asleep on Bucky’s couch three more times. Bucky joins him and Steve a couple of times on their morning run.
He doesn’t notice, is the thing; doesn’t notice how ever since Sam slept on his couch that night he’s been letting Bucky closer bit by bit, that as Bucky’s been wondering about the boundaries and structures of friendship, Sam’s been drawing in.

It turns out, when he’s not on the run, when he’s got time to evaluate what he wants out of life and to live something close to ‘civilian’, Bucky Barnes is a hot fucking mess. This isn’t the first time Sam’s found him asleep on the couch, or wearing yesterday’s eyeliner, or investigating whether iced-cake vodka shots do anything to get past the serum. The worst thing is it’s hard to stay stone-cold in the face of Bucky Barnes doing his best as a messy little twink with tousled wavy hair and pretty cheekbones and a fucking tongue piercing. The shit Steve had kicked up over that was ridiculous; apparently watching Bucky get lectured by Steve Rogers for half a fucking hour over needle safety and communicable diseases is enough for Sam to have kind of developed a soft spot.
Sam’s just trying to focus on the ‘mess’ part, okay, because contemplating ‘hot’ and ‘Bucky’ in the same sentence is not something he needs in his life. He’s just trying to live, that’s all. He doesn't deserve this. He doesn't deserve any of this.
