At 12 years old, Ilya still knew himself better than anyone could. And he didn’t need anyone, at all, he was big and strong and was gonna break all the hockey records! Body be fucking damned!
At 17 years old, all Ilya knew were cages and the etiquette to trade a smaller one for a bigger one and so on. He knew the locks couldn't be picked, that the bars were too strong, but there was always a bigger cage with thinner bars. Escape was a pipe dream, but a beautiful one. Ilya knew that much.

The man behind the camera laughs and points the camera to himself, showing his delighted expression at Ilya’s enthusiasm.
The camera turns back to Shane, and the man asks him his signature question, “If you were to cook something for me, like this evening, what would you make?”
“Ah, Shane would make you eat grass with some protein powder sprinkled on top. Maybe a carrot for dessert,” Ilya’s accented voice calls out from the phone speaker.
OR: Shane and Ilya are encountered by that guy who asks random people in New York if they'd cook for him for $100. They say yes because Ilya Rozanov watches Youtube Shorts (unfortunately) and recognizes the guy.

Shane’s aunt Thea and her wife Jules are two of his favorite people.
To his Juniors hockey team, Shane is known as an ally. He’s always been vocal in his support of queer people, and doesn’t allow any bigotry in the locker rooms he captains. But what they don’t know, is that Shane is gay.
His family knows. His close friends know. It’s not that he’s ashamed. It’s more that he knows hockey and queerness don’t mix well. They’re like oil and water. And Shane doesn’t want to be any more visible than he is, as a gifted, anxious, focused, Japanese-Canadian, newly MLH second-draft-pick hockey player.
Ilya and Shane have known of each other since they both started on different teams in the Junior league. They’ve never really been alone together, or even had a chance at further conversation, until the Prospect Cup and the draft in 2009.
Now it’s 2010 and Shane and Ilya are getting ready to leave Ottawa and Toronto, respectively. It’s difficult to deny the attraction they both feel. But Shane, being Shane, is going to try.

Three whole days Will’s heart hasn’t known whether to swell or break or rupture like his appendix. But he’s being discharged tomorrow, so it won’t be an issue for much longer, so for now he just pretends that the hand on his arm wants to be there. Because Will Byers-Hopper has never been chosen on purpose, and until tomorrow, he can pretend that this arrangement didn’t come about under duress.
