And the embarrassment creeps back in.
“Just - was wondering if you were leaving soon.” Tim clears his throat and it scrapes him up, choking on gravel. “I could use a lift.”
“You don’t have a ride?” Roy asks gently.
Oh, please don’t ask me that question. He did at one point, but he left him in the hallway where the music doesn’t reach, probably waiting for Tim to come back with muttered apologies insincere on his lips - or to slap him in the face, or something. He’s really trying not to do either here.

this is so good and special to me oh my god. tim and roy friendship mentorship tomfoolery. tim saying he’s in the ICU and babs knowing he’s lying. getting snickers bar mixers at the shitty sonic. getting home and asking your older brother if it’s safe to fall apart now even though you know the answer. damian having ice cream in the corner petulantly because he was told to Enjoy Himself. jason caps lock texting. tim and his long hair and his wingtip shoes and his sparkly chapstick and his tie and his thing with conner that neither of them want to name but conner still stands closer to the road. superb.
“Can I come down now?” Tim whispers into Dick’s ear.
“Yeah, honey,” Dick breathes right back. “Go right ahead.”
Which is good - and Tim kind of knew right off the bat that he could it do anyway, but - still good, because out pours shivers over his skin like asphalt wavering on a hot day, and he can feel Dick’s arm around him, but not his own back where the arm’s tucked around him. As if he’s just a ghostly outline, looking sick around his gills.
“Don’t think so hard, okay?” Dick whispers. “Don’t think at all. Just let yourself settle.”
Still, he starts to shake.

this is everything i love. dick who’s old and in love and yet terrified and tied endlessly to bruce. jason who leaves shoes behind and helps dick take care of damian. cass who grows and is the first to get properly married. tim who becomes a beautiful woman and never changes her name and never apologizes and thinks of dick in the opposite-same way bruce does. barbara who remembers what it’s like to be in love with dick grayson the same way she remembers what it was to get shot in the spine. he’s always thirteen to her and his hair sticks up all weird. damian looks up to his sister and his dad-brother and threatens jason on the ladder. this is everything to me
