Summary
Agott trusts Olruggio more than she trusts Qifrey, and perhaps that is because Qifrey's longing is occasionally too big to be silent. He imagines that it hangs in the air like a sour smell when he takes her shopping for robes or watches her curtsy neatly to the farmers when they buy freshly milled wheat. It is humiliating and shameful to covet girlhood like this, and every time he catches himself at it, a fear runs through him so sharp that it leaves bruises on his soul – the idea that anyone might see this as perversion is more than enough to keep his nights restless and his calm superficial. Qifrey is convinced that even Olruggio, whose comments over the years have ranged from endearingly naive to knowingly supportive, would be unable to bear witness to these tendencies without misunderstanding the root of the desire.

Summary
The evidence in favour of Qifrey liking… requests, so to speak, has been piling up. The logical conclusion is on one side of the razor's edge, but Olruggio is still—dithering.
One-off requests are one thing, but Olruggio has a theory. He may not have any personal experience beyond Qifrey himself, but his commissions over the years have come from many and varied patrons, with many and varied tastes. Olruggio may not have much experience personally, but his wealth of professional experience borders on ridiculous.
Olruggio has a theory about Qifrey, and acts on it. Things, as they tend to between the two of them, spiral rapidly.

Summary
The hands at his waist grip a little tighter. Qifrey, who has been cautiously opening himself to this kind of physical contact in the past few months, has been surprised to discover that he likes it—being held, pressed, kept tight. It stokes the part of him that is terrified of being trapped, just enough to keep him from relaxing.
It’s precisely this interplay between comfort and uneasiness that made him consider the possibility of using it to their advantage.

They'd only just ambled into the Kalhn textile shop when Qifrey caught sight of the short young woman working. She had a round face, rosy cheeks, flaxen hair. Her eyes had locked on Olruggio as soon as they’d entered.
Olruggio, for his part, thumbed through dyed wool samples as though he hadn't noticed. He likely wouldn't.
But Qifrey always noticed. Sometimes this left him as a voyeur: staring at someone staring at someone else. But other times, like today, his fixed presence at Olruggio’s side made him an involved party. There was always a delay, then a moment in which Qifrey became visible and the women realized he might be of help. Some of them were too scared to approach Olruggio outright—they’d built up a more intimidating version of him in their heads, had never heard him laugh wildly or watched dimples form when he smiled. Instead, they’d set their sights on Qifrey. Talk to him, or at least look at him imploringly, as though getting in his good graces might earn them the Torch’s attention.
He never felt like helping them.

The fact Atwert was currently his teacher could hardly make the situation that much more fraught than his own destroyed history already had.
