Everyone got home safely from the Franklin Expedition. After a long but ultimately fruitless attempt to find the Northwest Passage, they returned home with small findings.
George Henry Hodgson knows this. He survived. He can tell this because he is alive. He can tell this because when he ignores the broken clock on his wall and steps out the front door of his lodgings, he sees the front doors to the lodgings of the men he travelled with.
Except sometimes he dreams.
And in those dreams, the third lieutenant on the HMS Terror was a young man called John Irving. John Irving died in the Arctic. He wasn’t the first to die, and he wasn’t the last.
In these dreams, everything is very cold, and George is very hungry.
