She had seen the question on Scott’s face sometimes, on Stiles’ and Isaac’s, just a little bit of bafflement whenever they smelled that whiff of grief on her even as she said in words that the world was better off without Kate in it. They didn’t understand how Allison could still miss her. They didn’t get it and probably never would.
Derek, though. In a broken whisper he asked himself the same question she had asked herself every day since that night.
“Why can’t I hate him enough?”
Allison blinked against wetness and smiled; that hurt too. “Because you love him.”

Summary
Peter's attack on Kate at the station changed everything. Noah Stilinski was the alpha, and he had to deal with the regular business of being the sheriff of a large county without turning furry. Chris had to make sure Gerard’s visit didn’t ruin his career, his life, or his family in his father’s obsessive war against the supernatural. Allison had to decide if she and Scott had a chance after all, while dealing with the fact that her family was full of creepy sociopaths. Derek Hale didn’t want to deal with any of it, especially not the alpha who's taken his sister’s place.
Plus, the Alpha Pack comes to Beacon Hills, but unless they do sometime against the law, they're not the sheriff's problem.

Boyd and Erica are dead, the Alphas have retreated for now, planning their next move or waiting for Derek to make his. Jennifer has been sent home for her own safety. Isaac is with Scott, as he so often is, nowadays, and Derek can't really blame him. He has no idea where Peter is. And he just feels so empty, so numb, so lost.
He hears footsteps, shoes sloshing through water, a hummingbird heart, slow breathing, the smell of medicine and sugar-spice and stress.

Boyd is there, hovering over his claws, Isaac looks devastated, Jennifer looks bewildered and concerned and horrified, Kali looks smug, the twins are carefully keeping their faces blank but they're playing along, and- Gods, he's really going to be forced to do this, isn't he? Pack, his Pack, the make-shift family he'd all but accidentally gathered is going to die by his hand, and even if it's forced, it'll still be his fault, for wanting them, for needing them, for biting them.
Loving them.
He wants to close his eyes but he owes Boyd more than that.
And then, abruptly, in this saturated technicolor still-picture moment of chaos and violence- the eye of the storm- the door to the loft crashes open. With the water and the metal and the force of it, the sound is almost guttural, and far too loud- even Kali seems startled.
[Or, the one where Stiles time-travels just in time to save Boyd and Derek from the Alphas, and manages to heal everyone, including himself, just a little in the process.]

"Can you come home with us?" Freddie asks plaintively, and Stiles hooks a lock of auburn hair behind her ear with a little moue.
"Maybe some other day, chickadee, but, alas, I must return to the other children, as I've heard there are dragons afoot, and I can't leave them unguarded." They both gasp, half delighted, half horrified by the prospect.
"What about us?" Letty whimpers, and Stiles coos a conspiratorial smile.
"Didn't you know? Your uncle's a knight. And the bravest, most fearsome one of all, even the biggest, most terrifying monsters are afraid of him. Why do you think your mother asked him to come pick you up? She knew he would keep you safe, protect you."
They gasp, turning to each other, wide-eyed, awed and with realization dawning, before both girls, like flipping a switch, abruptly become utterly excited and agreeable about the idea of their uncle as a babysitting candidate. Stiles flashes a lop-sided grin over his shoulder at Derek, pleased with his accomplishment, even moreso when he sees the way the man's jaw has dropped.

Derek wakes gently with the whispering of wind through maples, pines, and sugar plums outside his open window. The distant sound of the water lapping shore across the road. Cars on the highway, people beginning their daily routine. Work, run errands, go home. Eat, sleep, work. Work. Rinse. Repeat.
Derek doesn’t bother sitting, only turns his head to watch. The way the sun's rays cling to the length of his lashes, lighting his irises like fire topaz. He’s beautiful. And he’s not real. But he looks at Derek with sincere concern and affection, a slow smile rising from where he stands in the corner of the room.

He closed his eyes and smiled a little, listening to his body trying to knit itself together too slowly to stop all the falling apart it was doing. The pain in his side was hot, radiating through him, flames of agony flickering inside him. He thought it was right for him to die in flames.
