There was silence except for the rain. She knew she wasn’t making any sense, but how could anybody possibly understand? She barely understood it herself. It made her happy to see that look in his eyes, and that was terrifying. It went against every instinct she'd spent years cultivating as she wove in and out of the shadows of Ketterdam. It went against everything she’d had to do to survive.

She liked to slip her legs over the sill and perch there, leaning against the frame, while he worked at his desk a few feet away, sketching plans or making notes or reviewing accounts. She found it comforting, balancing like that; if she looked one way she could see across the rooftops of Ketterdam, her own private domain. Look the other way and there was Kaz.
The day it happened, she took the stairs. Later, she’d wonder if things might have turned out differently had she’d chosen otherwise.
