Summary
I could see very clearly despite the dark, and indeed for once I did not stumble as I walked over the rough ground. I had no destination except away, a brute animal instinct of flight mastering my limbs while my mind busied with less coarse things, solacing itself in the smell of worm-wood, bitter and clean, and the spare barren walls of the valley, a worn purple like heather against the night.

Summary
The army moved forward, and the tower shivered. Nobody else seemed to notice. Lettie blinked, hard. For a moment she thought tears had distorted her vision, and touched her face, but it was dry. And the tower shivered, again, violently, an undeniable vibration. Shouts rose from the army, which broke, lost its neat rows of soldiers as they scattered backwards, and great chunks of Babel began to fall.
The roof, fallen in. The walls, clattering downward in a wave as each lost stone knocked loose another. Books, shelves, desks, indeterminate objects blurring in midair, falling like missiles. Her home, her Babel, her tower, falling.
--
Lettie sees the fall of Babel and the rise of Hermes. She still can't admit she's not the victim.

Bookmarker's Notes
"If he were only a man, and had been born, lived, and destined to die in this time, he would have taken her for a wife months ago. This was the type of existence he had dreamed of as a child, when he watched the friends he’d grown up with be lowered into the ground, dirt poured over their aged faces. The privilege of dying once. It was such a human thing, to live voraciously and die just as swiftly—to exist for a moment, and then vanish, their names lost to posterity. But what a moment it was! How beautiful they had burned! He’d thought about that when a noose had tightened around his neck the first time—how meaningless his death was when his life had had no meaning. And his life had no meaning because his death had none. Because he would come back again, would feel the tightening of the noose and the sting from the bullet, and it would still all mean less than a human who had lived when they had everything to lose."
