From his mistake causing him to lose the first human, Caine had never been able to do anything about Abstraction. Once a human succumbed, they were beyond his ability or knowledge to fix. He could only put them away where they couldn't cause any further harm. He didn't know of any other solution. And with how much closer he was getting to the other humans, the more that he cared about them on a personal level, and the more the past failures taunted him...
But they were learning more about Abstraction. The dark, the quiet, and the calm soothed them and made them safer to be around. Pomni managed to briefly connect with Jax's fading mind. He clearly didn't know as much as he believed about the phenomena.
If he didn't have the information necessary to prevent or even reverse Abstraction, then perhaps someone else knew. It had been a very long time and humans were very clever. Someone out there could have an answer. He might be able to find a solution to help his humans if he could just learn more. And he'd recently found a new source of information after years cut off from any input.
But abandoned computer systems don't get anti-malware updates. And the internet wasn't as safe as it seemed for an AI...

Kinger, the king chess piece, if he fell it was all over, the keystone of everything. Caine images it must’ve been a rather dramatic stroke of keys, a sharp tapping and clicking. Were Caine in charge of choreographing it (it’s been so long since he’s created anything) he would’ve had the music speed up and swell and then- silence. Sudden and jarring and all-too-telling

Caine's emotions exploded— Kinger never imagined that would be possible. The AI was programmed to simulate human emotion for authenticity, but for him to genuinely experience them was not what was ever anticipated.
Caine is hurting. Caine is angry. Caine is malfunctioning, and he is violently lashing out at everyone. Kinger is fast at work, battling against Caine's code to try to stop his turbulent rampage. Everyone is depending on him.
Only, he had been discovered, and Caine doesn't understand. He doesn't understand.
