My hands shook as I read and reread the letter. Strange. My body remembered the sensations of heart pounding, breathing catching, stomach dropping. None of those responses happened anymore and somehow I still felt an extremely visceral crush of panic.
I allowed A-Huan to guide me down onto the edge of the bed. He was so careful. He knew exactly how close to sit to be comforting without crowding me. I made myself meet his gaze, reminded my lips how to curve upward to reassure. I was fine. This was fine.
Being personally requested to address resentful spirits and demonic energy near Yi City was fine.

Luo turned Pei Su by the arm, noticing bruises and cuts across his face. “What is this…? Who did this to you? You didn’t look like this this morning.” His hand lifted Pei Su’s chin, forcing his face left, then right. Pei Su tried to break free, hissing when Luo caught his wrist. The sound made Luo’s chest tighten. One sharp tug and the sleeve slid back, revealing a raw laceration. Luo’s voice cracked, anger and panic colliding. “Care to explain? Don’t make me lose my mind!”
Pei Su said nothing. His hand kept moving, slicing vegetables with steadiness. Luo frowned, stepping closer. “Pei Su?” Then he saw it—blood smeared across the board, dripping from Pei Su’s fingers. His stomach lurched. “PEI SU!” The shout tore out of him. He lunged forward, grabbing Pei Su’s wrist. The knife slipped free, clattering to the floor as terror surging through Luo.

Luo was Forced to carve a mark into Pei Su’s neck using a sharp blade, Luo Weizhao trembled, he couldn’t do it—until a bullet shattered the wall beside Pei Su's head. With tears blurring his vision, Luo cut the skin he swore to protect.
