Summary
Stoick isn't blind. It hurts to admit it, but Hiccup looks visibly happier since he has let the teenagers go to the Edge. The boy lives for dragons, the way Stoick lives for the people of Berk. Nothing lights up his eyes more surely than the potential discovery of a new species, nothing excites him more than the thought of making things easier for dragons to live on Berk.
Stoick doesn't understand him. He probably never has. Hiccup seems to possess a deep loyalty to dragons than nothing else can equal, and he is ready to fight for them.
Stoick can only hope that, with time, Hiccup will turn this ardent, unflinching loyalty to his people.

Hiccup can speak to dragons.
It shouldn’t surprise Fishlegs as much as it does, and at first, it kind of doesn’t. Everybody knows that Hiccup can deal with dragons better than anyone, that he always manages to form a special bond with them that nobody else can figure out. And he talks to them, endlessly chattering to Toothless like he expects an answer. On the whole, dragons do seem to understand, is the thing. Fishlegs talks to Meatlug, too, but he’s always been under the impression that dragons react to his tone more than anything. To his body language too, probably.
But then, Hiccup starts to speak dragon.
