It’s a childish instinct, wanting someone to watch while you sleep; a holdover from the ancient past when Eridians still had predators. Most children grow out of it by the time they’re old enough for school. But Rocky is so, so alone, and he’s scared. So when he meets an alien after years and years of isolation, he tells a lie.
Yes, Eridians always watch each other sleep. Huge part of their culture actually, and you can’t argue with culture.
It’s not like Grace will ever meet another Eridian who could tell him otherwise.

Summary
This story explores what might have happened if Grace had undergone the preparations for the Hail Mary mission while conscious.
His refusal remains, but the process continues anyway.
It is the story of a body undergoing coercive medical procedures for a mission that the mind refuses. It is a psychological deep dive into the mechanics of what happens when life confronts us with challenges or blows of fate that we cannot avoid.
It is not a story about cruelty or torture. The story focuses on the psychological processes unfolding within both Grace and the team preparing his body for the long coma, as well as on the ethical dead ends that challenge everyone involved and offer no easy solutions.
Drawing on my background in psychology and medicine, I have tried to portray the medical procedures and psychological processes as realistically as possible. It is science fiction after all, so it leaves room for creative choices, omissions, and simplifications.
**Content warning:** If medical procedures, states of intense fear, or confronting one’s own mortality are sensitive topics for you, this story may be challenging to read.

Okay, sure. So, there was a word for people who didn’t find other people sexy. Great. A normal word. A well-known word. And not a medical condition.
But surely whoever wrote this understood that it was an anomaly. There weren’t enough people like this to warrant a label. After all, what was the point of a human who didn’t want sex?
(What was the point of me? — I’d asked a hundred times before.)
Or: A heteronormative movie adaptation, a very weird BuzzFeed article, and an internet rabbit hole lead Grace to the discovery of a label sixty years in the making.
