Ilya’s head spun as he registered the words in his brain. “You’re gay?”
Silence. There were the brief sounds of microphone static as he waited for Shane to speak. “Don’t tell me you’re fucking homophobic, or some shit.”
“No, no– fuck,” Ilya collected himself. “I like guys too. I mean, shit, I’m playing Roblox right now, man, isn’t it obvious?”
Shane laughed lightly, and Ilya felt immediately better after hearing the noise. “True.”

That was before. For the past three years, Shane had been in a long-term relationship, and everything between him and Ilya was over. Well, not this time. He returns to Ottawa after his breakup, reopening a door he thought he had closed years ago.

Ethan finally turned away from the game and made his way over to Shane to press up against his back as Shane slipped his shoes on. Shane turned in his arms to kiss Ethan, but as he brought his face closer, Ethan laughed and pulled back to look at him.
“Wait, you’re not really gonna wear those ugly reading glasses to dinner, are you?”
Shane’s face flushed as he reached up and took his glasses off before setting them on the side table next to the door. A loud noise startled him and he looked over to see that Ilya had tossed his game controller onto the coffee table haphazardly. He stood up abruptly, nostrils flared and mouth pinched into a tight line as he stalked off to his bedroom, muttering something in Russian along the way.

“What are you doing here?” Shane asks Ilya.
“Svetlana set me up on a blind date,” he responds, doesn’t bother lying. Curious to see what his reaction will be. “What are you doing here?” He throws back.
Shane’s eyebrows do something complicated. They’re interrupted by a knock on the door.
“Babe? You okay in there? You’ve been in there for a while,” a voice comes through.
“I’ll be right out, just washing my hands,” Shane responds stiffly. They hear footsteps walk away from the bathroom.
“Babe?” Ilya repeats. Watches as Shane’s cheeks turn pink again.
“That’s Jackson,” Shane states. “My boyfriend. It’s our one year anniversary.”
“Ah.” Is all Ilya can say. Tries to smile, “Congratulations.”

“Why did you have to go and get traded?! You realise we’re going to have to see each other every day from now on, and play together, and-”
“Yes,” Ilya interrupted. He didn’t want to know how long Hollander’s list was. “I know.”
Hollander took a deep breath. “Okay, listen,” he said. “Just so we’re clear - we don’t know each other outside of playing against each other, right?”
“Right.”
“And we can’t- can’t hook up anymore.”

Except for the big tall Russian one that wont stop staring at him like he knows something Shane doesn't. Like he's waiting for Shane to snap. Like he's begging Shane to do something.
And Shane won’t, obviously. Because Ilya is the type of man to reel you in and the leave you high and dry. Leave you looking for pieces of him in every new person that you meet, leave you looking for signs you didn't just make the whole thing up, like some wild fantasy that was born of monotony.
Oh, and he fact he has a boyfriend who he loves. A lot. It isn't monotonous. Its love.
